Deadliest Roads in Northeastern Pennsylvania
A June story in the Pocono Record noted new analysis from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) on the deadliest roads in the Northeastern part of the state. Between 2007 and 2017, there have been at least five fatalities on 45 separate stretches of road in Northeastern Pennsylvania, spanning all seven counties.

The Most Dangerous Stretch of Road in NEPA
According to the analysis by PennDOT and the Pocono Record, Route 435 in Lackawanna County is among the deadliest stretches of road in Northeastern Pennsylvania. A number of people drive on Route 435 on their way to or out of Scranton since it links up to Interstate 380.
According to the numbers, 14 people have died in 13 separate crashes on Route 435 along a 13-mile stretch from Dunmore to Clifton Township.
Other Dangerous Roads in NEPA
The Pocono Record also highlighted the following deadly stretches of road in Northeastern Pennsylvania:
- Route 924 in Luzerne County - 14 fatal collisions along 3.8 miles in Hazle Township
- Route 196 in Monroe County - 15 fatal collisions along 5.7 miles in Coolbaugh Township
- Route 29 in Susquehanna County - 5 fatal collisions along 2.4 miles in Dimock Township
- Route 6 in Wyoming County - 7 fatal collisions along 3.5 miles in Meshoppen Township
- Route 6 in Pike County - 9 fatal collisions along 6.5 miles between Dingman Township and Shohola Township
- Route 191 in Wayne County - 5 collisions along 7 miles between Lebanon Township and Manchester Township
A Focus on Accidents Around the Poconos
The Pocono Record took a moment to highlight fatal crashes in the Poconos (Monroe, Pike and Wayne Counties). The numbers are startling.
From 2007 to 2017, 458 fatal collisions in the Poconos claimed 496 lives. In Monroe County alone, there were 297 fatal auto accidents. The report noted that 50 of those fatal crashes occurred on just 28.5 miles of road along Routes 209, 611, and 196.
Route 209 proved especially deadly, with 28 crashes occurring along two different stretches of road. According to the Pocono Record, speeding and aggressive driving were the most common causes of crashes on Route 209.
